CUNY Online BA Student ID Card

For the CUNY Online BA students, the ID cards are issued through the School of Professional Studies and are picture-less but there should always be a current semester validation sticker. Students will be expected to produce a photo ID along with their CUNY Online BA-ID card.

Vendor Printer 8-22-06

Noticing that our past arrangement to place an icon on the Internet public
workstation to Activate and Clear Vendor printer was confusing and
frustrating to users, especially that it can only work if a user is already
logged in via Bluesocket. In the new public workstations being installed
this week, I have removed the icon.

Users will now see "Vendor Printer" as an option to direct print jobs to.
With this method there will be no popups anymore. That software never
worked smoothly with Bluesocket. But since we have extremely few jobs sent
to the vendor printer, there will be not confusion between jobs sent at the
release workstation. This new way will eliminate current problems and make
Brian happy too.

Access to the Newman Library

Access to the Newman Library is generally restricted to current students, faculty and staff of the City University of New York, as well as retired CUNY faculty. Access is also permitted for current faculty and students of Empire State College with a valid Empire State College identification card.
Baruch College Alumni who are interested in library access should contact the Alumni Relations Office (646-660-6097).
Residents of the New York Metropolitan Area who need access to specific materials in the Newman Library that are not available in the public library system should contact their local library about obtaining a referral card.
Other individuals with an ongoing need for access to the Newman Library, including alumni of other CUNY campuses, are encouraged to apply for membership in the Friends of the Newman Library. For more information, including the fee schedule, visit the Friends of the Newman Library Web page.
For further information regarding access to the Newman Library, please contact the Office of the Chief Librarian (646 312-1655).
A poster of this page has been placed at the entrance of the library.
In addition, please note the policy on Access and Borrowing Privileges at CUNY that is posted on the CUNY Libraries web site, which states that "alumni have access only to their home campus library".

Reserve Overnight Loans

When checking out materials that are overnight reserve items (one, two or three day loans) we no longer change the due time to 4:50 pm. At the time they borrowed the item that is the time it is due, except if it is due Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, than the due time is 4:50 pm. For example; if a patron borrows an overnight item on 11/22/05 at 12:15 pm it is due on 11/23/05 at 12:15 pm. It is also important that we write this on this on the due date slip as well. If the item does not have a date due slip please put one on.

Can a professor show a video outside of their class?

Technically unless our film (I assume the Prof is talking about a video or dvd) was purchased with a license granting other than direct curriculum related showings, one could not show it. But since he is not charging admission and as long as it is curriculum related it would be ok if it were not advertised to the entire college, but limited to students just in his classes as a special event.

If students should ask:
1. At the request of accountancy faculty, the two-volume paperback Solutions Manuals for Kieso's Intermediate Accounting have been removed from reserves. (They were on reserve under Benis.)

2. Since the students in the classes using this book now have electronic access to homework problems selected by their professors. The problems are also graded electronically.

3. The professors did not want all the problems and the solutions available via reserves.

4. If there are questions, students should consult their accounting professors.

Checking-out Reference, Non-Circulating, and/or Periodicals Books

If a Baruch faculty wants to borrow Reference, Non-Circulating, and /or Periodicals book(s)they must go to the reference desk.

Once the patron comes with the form (see form below) you can check-out the item using CUNY+. If the item record needs to be created you can do so using Quick Catalog in ITEMS. Be sure to put a note stating "When returned
put back in the _____ collection."

The reference staff giving the patron authorization to borrow the book(s) will also indicate when the book is due, therefore you MUST be sure to change the due date. Inform the patron to please return the book(s) back to the circulation counter, so that we can check-in the book and remove it from his/her record.

Printing problem for Electronic Reserve.

1. When printing always click on the icon of the printer. Do NOT use File
then print.
2. Then when you receive the print box, check off the box "Print As Image."
It will print slower, but should print correctly.

Patron Barcode Does Not Match on CUNY+ & ID Card

When you scan a patron's barcode the name on the ID MUST
match the name on Aleph (CUNY+) regardless of the patron
status or home campus. We have had a few incidents were
the patron's barcode on the CUNY + does not match the
name on the ID presented.

You should do the following:
1. If the patron is Baruch person give the patron a temporary Baruch College Courtesy Card for a few days only.
If the patron is from another CUNY college give him/her the Open Access Card for one week only. The books still get the loan period the patron is entitled too.
Be sure to inform the patron that he/she needs to take care of this ASAP.

2. If the patron is from Baruch give the patron a letter to present to the Baruch ID office. (The letter is in the black display bin). Eric or I need to sign it. Also you should call the ID office before sending the patron down.

3. Print out both patron records' and make a note of the ISSUE Date: on the Baruch ID card. Don't forget to put the print-out in my mail box, with your name and dated.

DVD in Media Carrel

There will be a revised way to borrow a solo DVD player in Media Carrel Room 344.

Lend the following items:

A) Key #62 “ROOM 344 MEDIA CARREL” It will have the “Borrow with special headphones & remote for DVD in Media Carrel” label.

B) Pioneer DVD Player remote labeled “Room 344 Media Carrel Remote for DVD Player.

C) Headphones labeled “Room 344 Media Carrel Headphones #23 for DVD Player Use Only”

Items A, B & C are in the keys drawers, in the green folder.

Media or Reserve DVD(s). Patrons are not encouraged to bring & play their own DVDs. Only DVDs in the Baruch Collection are to be played in the Media Carrel.

Each item will be charged out for 3-hours or due 10 minutes before service desk closes. When returned, discharge each item, The headphones & remote will be placed in a plastic bag and placed in the keys drawer, in the Two-Hour calculator file.

To use the headphones, insert jack into the monitor’s headphone port. It must be insert nearly halfway, in order to listen in left & right sides of the headphones. Otherwise, only one side will have sound.

Speaking of the small group viewing room, I have put labels on the Room 352 key (#28). Patrons must borrow a remote in addition to the key.

Electronic Reserve - Copyright Guidelines

When taking in reserve requests make sure the "Reserve
Request Form" is filled out and that you sign and date
the bottom portion.

Please make sure that there is a complete citation for the
material being submitted.

Make sure that material submitted conforms with the e-reserve
guidelines.

For material in excess of FAIR USE (a chapter, a selection,
not > 10% one article from an issue of a journal), explain
to them that only that which can conform to FAIR USE
will be put up, pending permission or payment of royalties.

Take the time to go over the material that is brought in while
they are still here. Call your backup to watch the desk.

If you are unsure about any of this or questions arise when
material is brought in contact Ms. Ramos or Eric Neubacher.

a) Students can use stationary computers for Internet search, no wireless access. Printing is available with a purchased copy card. Entrance to other CUNY libraries is not permitted.

b) Specialized program needs can be considered as needed with the understanding that there should be no extra charges for the use of existing materials and services. Privileges do not include remote access to electronic collections due to licensing restrictions. CAPS should pay for anything that generates out of the ordinary expenditures for the library.

c) CAPS will assist in the recoup of loaned materials by instituting a bursar's stop and the subsequent withholding of grades until materials are returned. No Certificates will be issued if a student has outstanding items or fines from the library. In the event fines and/or lost item fees are deemed un-collectable, CAPS will reimburse the library for any CAPS’ students outstanding fines/fees.

d) CAPS will use its relationships with publishers to provide texts where possible.

Faculty and academic administrators have borrowing privileges of Baruch staff (6 week loan period).

Processes to Support

To Initiate Privileges: For certificate students to activate additional privileges (beyond library entry), they must take their receipt to the Circulation Desk. Receipt reflects full duration of certificate program and privileges will be granted for this term. CAPS Director of Admissions will provide a student with an official payment letter to present to the circulation desk as proof of payment and enrollment in the program.

To End Privileges: On a trial basis, CAPS will submit a list to the Manager of Access Services for her/him to see if any students have outstanding fines and/or fees due two weeks prior to the end of a term. In addition, the CAPS Registrar will wait one month after Certificate Programs to end before issuing any certificates, s/he will contact the library to see if any materials are still outstanding so student can reimburse library if fines/fees are due.

CUNY Research Foundation, and is in good standings. These patrons are entitled to open access privileges. In the local information under CUN50 their
patron status code is 31.

CD R/W Dell vs Macs

The Dell CD R/W is in a clear sleeve and the word Dell is written on the CD R/W.
